Is it bad to take expired supplements?
What happens to supplements when they reach their expiration date? They are a day older than yesterday!Â
Over time, supplements lose potency. The expiration date or “best by” date are an estimate of how long a supplement will deliver at least 100% of the potency listed on the label. This estimate is based on stability testing, or is the industry standard 2-year shelf life used if stability testing is not yet complete. It is based on proper storage of the product, which is usually at room temperature, not in direct sunlight, with the cap closed and not in a very humid environment. Â
Some supplements are loaded at time of manufacture with an overage of ingredients that are known to lose potency over time. This ensures that the product will contain at least the amount listed on the label at expiration date. Â
Some supplements become more odorous as they age. This reflects oxidation of the natural ingredients. Â
You can extend your supplements shelf life with proper storage – store at room temperature, not in direct sunlight, with the cap closed and not in a humid environment such as the bathroom. The kitchen is generally better.
Expired supplements don’t turn to poison. They don’t start growing horns. They just slowly lose potency. Â
